One-by-one, 417 of the Corona del Mar Sea Kings lined up to receive their diplomas and to say one final goodbye to what just became their alma mater in Davidson Field on Thursday afternoon.

This is the 58th graduating class since the school was founded in 1962, said Principal Joshua Hill, who started his first year at the helm of Corona del Mar High School last fall.

The district announced in April that it would be holding in-person graduations, but with additional precautions such as limiting attendance to just four people per student and requiring masks and social distancing. The ceremony was also livestreamed for those that couldn’t or didn’t want to attend in-person.

Messages streamed in online with support from some families both local and as far away as Texas and Florida while families present at the ceremony clapped and cheered as students filed into the stadium and crossed the field in their light blue graduation gowns.

Seniors Troy Tsubota, Hannah Mofid and Ryan McTague each offered their remarks on-stage to their peers.

By email, Hill said, “We are so proud of these students. They demonstrated perseverance as they endured shifts in school programming, instructional adjustments from teachers, and the loss of activities that make school meaningful.”

“When we told them to stay home, they did. When we asked them to come back, they were here,” said Hill.

“When we continued to hold them to a high standard, they continued to exceed our expectations. With so much uncertainly still out there related to the pandemic, one thing is certain,” he added, “The CdM class of 2021 doesn’t quit, confronts and overcome challenges and is going to experience great success in the future.”
